75th Anniversary of Holodomor in Hartford, CT
On May 17, 2008 the Ukrainian-American community of the State of Connecticut gathered for a solemn commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the Holodomor of 1932-1933. With the active support of Governor Rell, Senators Dodd and Lieberman, U.S. Congressional delegation from Connecticut as well as leading political leaders from throughout the state the local Ukrainian-Americans were joined by delegations from other groups who have experienced genocides in their history including the Jewish, Armenian, Cambodian, Tibetan, and Darfurian communities to remember the Ukrainian famine/genocide and to denounce all genocides.
The solemn commemoration began with an ecumenical memorial service at St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, followed by a procession to the State Capitol, carrying the International Holodomor Torch, (a torch carried around the world to a variety of Ukrainian communities. The torch’s final stop was in Kyiv, Ukraine in November 2008 where it lit an eternal flame at the site of the planned memorial complex), and a special commemoration program, where the victims and survivors of the Famine were honored.
